A substantial Placenticeras meeki ammonite from the St. Mary River near Magrath, Alberta. Measuring 22 cm (!) at its greatest dimension, this specimen displays a broad coiled form with patches of vivid red and green iridescence across the preserved shell.
Intricate, branching suture patterns are exposed where portions of the outer shell are missing, adding fine structural detail to the display. The contrast between iridescent shell and visible sutures offers several features to appreciate at close range, while the specimen’s size gives it a strong presence. Like the majority of these fossils, it has been coated with an automotive-grade lacquer to help protect it and bring out its special colours.
Obtained by Calgary geologist and collector George Sutherland from Korite/Canada Fossils in the 1990s, this ammonite is from the classic Alberta locality, has excellent collection provenance, and striking shell detail—an appealing addition to any Canadian fossil collection.
