Collection: Alberta Fossils

Alberta is world-renowned for its exceptional dinosaur and fossil record. However, fossils collected in Alberta are subject to some of the strictest fossil-protection laws in Canada.

Under Alberta's Historical Resources Act, palaeontological resources found in the province are protected, and ownership is vested in the Crown in right of Alberta. As a result, collecting a fossil in Alberta does not normally give the collector private ownership of that fossil or the right to sell it.

What is a Disposition?

In special circumstances, the Government of Alberta may formally transfer ownership of a fossil from the Crown to an individual. This transfer of ownership is commonly referred to as a disposition.

A disposition is particularly significant for collectors because it establishes private ownership of specimens that would otherwise remain Crown property. The specific documentation associated with a specimen provides the record of that transfer.

For this reason, Alberta dinosaur fossils that have been formally dispositioned and can legally enter the collector market are uncommon.

The Harvey Negrich Collection

The Alberta dinosaur fossils offered here originate from the collection of Harvey Negrich of Calgary, a longtime fossil collector and an important contributor to Alberta's palaeontological community.

Harvey co-founded the Alberta Palaeontological Society in 1986 and has contributed decades of volunteer service to the geological and palaeontological community.

In 2026, Harvey obtained a disposition for his Alberta vertebrate fossil collection. Disposition Certificate #001590 was issued July 7, 2026, with individual specimens recorded under the disposition.

Rocky Mountain Minerals & Fossils subsequently acquired the collection directly from Harvey.

Each applicable specimen offered in this collection is identified by its individual specimen number and its connection to Disposition Certificate #001590. A copy of the relevant disposition documentation will accompany the specimen.

A Piece of Alberta Collecting History

A number of the dinosaur teeth in this collection have an additional layer of provenance. They remain in distinctive gold-coloured presentation boxes with original labels from Green's Rock & Lapidary in Calgary.

These boxes were used by Green's in the late 1960s and early 1970s to sell dinosaur teeth from the Drumheller area, before Alberta's current fossil-protection framework was established.

Where present, the original box and label are included with the specimen and form part of its documented collecting history.
