Corundum (variety Sapphire) - Mogok, Myanmar

A striking natural sapphire specimen from the legendary Mogok Stone Tract of Myanmar, one of the world's most celebrated localities for corundum. The specimen consists of intergrown blue sapphire crystals displaying a complex, sculptural form with numerous well-defined crystal faces.
The corundum shows an attractive soft blue to blue-grey coloration with a natural lustre that highlights the individual growth surfaces. Rather than a simple isolated crystal, the intergrown habit creates considerable three-dimensional character and makes the specimen interesting from multiple viewing angles.
Mogok has produced exceptional sapphires and rubies for centuries, and natural, uncut corundum specimens such as this preserve the original crystal growth and mineralogical character of material from this historic gem region.
