The terminal toe bone or ungual from a ceratopsian (horned) dinosaur. This element would have occupied the end of one of the animals three toes and formed the bony core of its hoof-like tip. Measuring 9 cm at its greatest dimension, the specimen displays a broad, tapered form and a pronounced curved profile. These are very difficult to find in complete condition due to there porous nature. This specimen is missing a small amount of the very tip (distal end) and shows evidence of water erosion; As skeletons disarticulated after death, streams and rivers often washed away and redistributed their bones often wearing them down.
The ungual was collected from the badlands near Patricia, Alberta, by long-time fossil collector, Harvey Negrich. This is a good unrestored and engaging example of the foot anatomy of a horned dinosaur. Its substantial size, distinctive form, and collection provenance make it an appealing addition to an Alberta dinosaur collection.
Legal Status: This specimen is legally available for private ownership and resale under Alberta Disposition Certificate #001590. A copy of the disposition documentation will accompany the specimen. Learn more about Alberta fossils and the disposition process.
