A substantial hadrosaur dentary from the Horseshoe Canyon Formation near Drumheller, Alberta. Hadrosaurs, commonly known as duck-billed dinosaurs, possessed highly specialized jaws containing tightly packed groups of teeth in dental batteries. Teeth would have occupied the prominent grooves or slots, across this 28 cm long specimen.Successive replacement teeth maintained a working surface for processing plant material as older teeth wore down. It is believed large adults may have had as many as 1800 teeth in the skull but with only 450 functioning at one time; the remainder growing underneath the active teeth ready to replace them once worn out. Their jaws formed an essential part of this remarkable feeding system, with the upper and lower jaws working together to shear edible plant material.
From the Harvey Negrich Collection, this specimen offers a tangible connection to that anatomy. Its substantial size, visible structural detail, and collection provenance make it an engaging display piece for collectors interested in Alberta’s dinosaurs. This specimen has been repaired but not restored (coloured or patched) in any manner.
