Spherical Calcite on Basalt - Zhejiang Province, China

An unusual and sculptural Chinese specimen featuring rounded, pale yellow calcite formations within dark brown basalt matrix. Several large spherical aggregates are accompanied by numerous smaller rounded growths across the cavity surface, creating an intriguing landscape-like appearance.

The calcite formed as secondary mineralization within cavities in the volcanic basalt. Its soft yellow colour and textured surfaces contrast strongly with the dark, rugged matrix. This is certainly an eye-catching piece and was recently part of Steve Potvin's extensive calcite collection.
