Aragonite “Bird’s Nest” with Cave Pearls - Styrian Erzberg, Austria

An unusual aragonite formation commonly known as “Bird’s Nest” aragonite, featuring numerous rounded cave pearls nestled within a broad grey, cream and tan aragonite sinter formation. Of course this is not really a bird's nest but certainly resembles one, hence the name. The mixture of smooth pearl-like forms, rounded pisolitic growths and textured surfaces gives this specimen a fascinating organic appearance.

Cave pearls form when mineral-rich water deposits successive layers of calcium carbonate around small nuclei such as grains of sand or rock fragments. Their resemblance to eggs resting within the surrounding aragonite formation gives specimens of this type their descriptive “Bird’s Nest” name. Finding a formation of this size (and keeping it intact during extraction) is certainly impressive.

The specimen comes from the historic Styrian Erzberg iron mine near Eisenerz, Austria, a locality known for secondary calcite and aragonite formations. It was formerly part of the Steve Potvin Collection, and the accompanying collection label is included. A truly fascinating conversation piece.
