Killer colour! Although it is rare we offer uncrystallized specimens, we certainly made an exception for this impressive sugilite. About 90% of this specimen is a deep, rich purple hue with the remainder a dark brown to rose red, somewhat reminiscent of jasper. This complex cyclosilicate is named for Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi, who first identified it in 1944. South African specimens, such as this one, are mined from a stratiform manganese deposit in the Kalahari desert. Ex Steve Potvin collection. From N'Chwaning, Kuruman, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Dimensions: 3 x 3.5 x 4.5 cm
