Mineral collectors soon discover the importance of Tsumeb, Namibia. It is amongst the top three localities in the world for the sheer number of species found there (349 to date) as well as the wonderful beauty of those species. Smithsonite, a zinc carbonate, is amongst the most attractive minerals from Tsumeb. A recent article in Rocks & Minerals (March/April 2025, Volume 100, Number 2) further reveals the impressive diversity of smithsonite from Tsumeb alone. Using the Rocks & Minerals article as a guide, one could make a serious collection of Tsumeb smithsonites alone and have a visually-incredible collection whose value will likely appreciate over time.
This smithsonite has a pleasing honey-brown colouration with large crystals in a somewhat stalactite-like formation. The crystals have a nice chatoyancy to them and are well-formed. I have taken two videos to showcase both sides of the specimen as each has something to offer. This specimen is from the late Garry Kolodinsky collection in Victoria, British Columbia. From Tsumeb, Namibia. Dimensions: 6 cm x 8.5 cm
