Fluorite (Spinel-Twin), Tourmaline, Quartz & Microcline, Erongo, Namibia
Combinations of several aesthetic mineral species into a single piece are certainly not uncommon from Erongo, Namibia. Finding one with a Spinel-Law twinned fluorite crystal on the other hand is another story. From noted pegmatite specialist, Mike Menzies, we have this terrific specimen with a 1.5 x 2.5 cm twinned green & dark purple fluorite with nice crystal edges. The dark purple is concentrated along the fluorite crystal edges which helps highlight the specimen. The fluorite, somewhat frosted, is centred on a complex but attractive cluster of other minerals including terminated quartz and tourmaline (variety schorl) crystals upon microcline. The schorl and microcline both show evidence of natural etching which is common at Erongo. This large thumbnail specimen has a lot going on! From Erongo, Namibia. Dimensions: 3 cm x 3 cm x 4 cm
