Epidote (bent crystal), Knappenwand, Untersalsbachtal, near Salsburg, Austria (ex-Smithsonian) - Collected 1866
A wonderful specimen with so many stories to tell. First, we have a very nice epidote with multiple terminations with some attached byssolite. The main crystal is bent; a natural break and regrowth in at an angle to the original crystal growth. Additionally, the specimen is mounted on a simple Styrofoam base with labels affixed identifying it as having come from the Carl Bosch collection at the Smithsonian Institution. It further notes the epidote was collected in 1866, so this piece has traded hands a few times! We recently acquired it from a Calgary collector. From Knappenwand, Untersalsbachtal, near Salsburg, Austria. The crystal is 6 cm tall x 2 cm wide. The base measures 6.5 cm long x 2.5 cm wide.
