vertebra
Hadrosaur fossil vertebra, Drumheller area, Alberta (disposition #001590)

A substantial fossil vertebra from a hadrosaur, or duck-billed dinosaur, recovered from the Red Deer River badlands near Drumheller, Alberta. Hadrosaurs were a large family of herbivorous dinosaurs forming large herds in the Cretaceous period. Due to its size and discovered locality, this is likely from an Edmontosaurus. This specimen has a broad but partially incomplete centrum (the most massive, round portion of the vertebra that would have articulated with other vertebrae making up the backbone). The neural arch is partially preserved and would have enclosed the spinal cord in life.

Measuring 12 cm at its greatest dimension and weighing over 1 kg, it has a strong display presence and makes an appealing addition to a collection focused on Alberta’s prehistoric life.
