Although I did not have the opportunity to meet Bill I think we would have been kindred spirits based on this passion for minerals, fossils, meteorites and artifacts.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBill was born in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. Educated in Providence's public schools, Bill's fascination with minerals started in sixth grade and he never looked back. His collection reached over 1600 specimens and it travelled with him on all his many moves, no matter the cost. Still, he didn't want to be a geologist or a dentist like his father. Instead, he chose biochemistry, graduating from Brown University with an A.B. in biology, from the University of Connecticut with a Ph.D. in biochemistry and completing his NIH postdoctoral studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt was there that he met Jinny (Virginia), who'd travelled down from Toronto with her roommate and a visitor from England one weekend. After ten dates, they decided to cut to the chase and forget this iffy travel between Ithaca and Toronto; and soon married in her hometown of Calgary in 1970. And so began their lives together. First in New Jersey, where Bill taught at Rutgers University and then to Cincinnati, Ohio. He was recruited by Rice University's team of heart research scientists to join them at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLooking towards retirement, the West Coast of Canada, specifically BC, specifically North Saanich on Vancouver Island beckoned. Jinny wanted to return to her Canada and Bill was ok with this, especially considering the advantages of the climate and the chance to sail again. Clearly Bill and Virginia enjoyed their lengthy retirement years together on Vancouver Island - a good choice of locations for sure! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBill was 86 years old when he passed on May 22, 2025. His collection of minerals was very diverse, showing a mix of simple rock specimens he self-collected in the 1940-50s in his home state of Rhode Island through to first-class American and Mexican minerals. While most of us are forced to focus (usually due to a lack of display\/storage space) Bill collected it all! His fossil collection was perhaps the high-light which included amazing Russian trilobites, Mazon Creek ferns and arctic mammoth teeth. He spent some serious money on meteorites, polished spheres and an impressive suite of American indigenous artifacts (we are currently trying to repatriate this component back to this USA). He seemed to have a preference for ultraviolet reactive minerals from Franklin, New Jersey based on the large selection he amassed. Virginia later admitted they often drove by Franklin during their time living in Rhode Island and Ohio. Incredibly, a cave in the Capillitas mining district had stalactites coloured pink due to their manganese (rhodochrosite) content. More often than not, the stalactites were then sliced and polished to reveal the incredible colour (and patterns) within. These stalactites ranged in diameter but specimens greater than a few centimetres are truly special. This slice is 8 cm in diameter with excellent colour and is quite gemmy. Both sides show equally well. In this case, we have a very large witherite crystal that experienced a tectonic break during growth. The break is filled with purple fluorite and white calcite. The tear separated the witherite into two halves which may have continued to grow, but at slightly different angles. The tear through the witherite is not complete and almost appears to have healed itself near the large termination. It almost appears that it sutured together with stitches! While the tear is interesting geologically, the witherite itself is a beast measuring 6.5 cm x 6.5 cm x 5 cm. With barium the key element in this mineral, it is very hefty at this size. The crystal is complete with deep colour and terrific luster. Fluorescence is very nice under short wave UV light. The Minerva No 1 Mine is arguably the best locality for the species worldwide and this piece is no exception. Ex Bill Rouslin collection. The colour, size and attractive placements with muscovite mica are truly dazzling and one of my favourite mineral combinations. This specimen is a nice grouping of four large aquas with a sprinkling of muscovite between the crystals. The aquamarines have razor sharp edges with no damage. The basal contact actually looks partially re-crystallized too. Perhaps difficult to see in the photographs are the nice striations on the crystals and come colour zoning as well. According to his wife, decades ago they used to drive past the mines at \u003cstrong\u003eFranklin, New Jersey\u003c\/strong\u003e on a regular basis. Apparently he made many side trips to the mines and picked up many classic specimens from that locality (watch for future listings). Perhaps the star piece of his Franklin acquisitions was this cabinet-sized \u003cstrong\u003erhodonite\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003efranklinite\u003c\/strong\u003e combination. The light pink flags the rhodonite as the zinc and calcium-bearing variety called \u003cstrong\u003efowlerite\u003c\/strong\u003e. There is a small amount of calcite at the base of the rhodonites which makes me think this piece was etched out from calcite (the calcite fluoresces brightly under long wave UV light). The rhodonites are big with black, opaque franklinite crystals attached to their sides and at their bases. Note instead of the typical octahedral form, the franklinites are dodecahedral! This is an impressive mineralogical specimen from a famous locality that is long out of production. Specimens like these are important historically and need to be curated appropriately. This locality has yielded some very colourful and rare phosphate species, mostly from the early 1900s and 1930s. The combinations of green (variscite) with yellow\/brown (crandallite) are quite attractive. Pieces like this one sometimes also show blue-lavender, which is wardite. Most of these minerals are massive (no crystals) but sometimes, very rarely, small cavities within the nodules will reveal tiny treasures. In this case, part of the crandallite rind has peeled off showing sheathes of small elongated, bluish gordonite crystals! Clay Canyon is the type locality for both wardite and gordonite. This is a rare opportunity to not only acquire an attractive variscite, but with one with several other rare phosphates. The lapis lazuli used in ancient Egypt was derived from Sar-e-Sang. This lazurite crystal is one of many great minerals that come from the same locality. This crystal is a beast - measuring 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm - and is sitting proudly atop of white marble. The specimen has a nice deep blue colour and is well crystallized on one side. Admittedly, the other side is poorly formed but still has great colour. This one is hard to miss and really stands out when on display. From an older collection so this probably came to market in the 1990s or early 2000s. My youngest son remarks the cubic fluorite reminds him of his favourite video game: Minecraft! Although I have photographed this specimen \"laying down\", I think it may look more attractive set vertically if mounted properly.
